FISHING TOURNAMENTS

We plan to cease blasting operations during fishing tournaments that will be located on the Menominee River.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

As our waterfront construction continues in a portion of the Menominee River adjacent to the shipyard, we need to limit river traffic in this specific location for a few minutes each weekday afternoon from 4 – 5 p.m. CT, so that large sections of bedrock can be broken up and safely removed. At this time we are not planning to blast on the weekends.

Our work along our waterfront must be accomplished from late spring to mid-Autumn.  We have coordinated with the Army Corps of Engineers, local law enforcement, the U.S. Coast Guard, the cities of Marinette and Menominee, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to facilitate our activities in a safe and responsible manner.

This work is required for FMM to build and deliver larger vessels under contract with the U.S. Navy.  We appreciate your patience and endeavor to minimize the impact to those who enjoy the Menominee River as much as we do.  Keep in mind that the Menominee River will be open for all traffic and activities every day, except for a few minutes each weekday afternoon. We plan to limit construction activities to weekdays only, and we will observe holidays.

Check out the detailed maps below to determine which areas of the Menominee River will be temporarily restricted during times of construction and blasting.”

Q&A

When will this occur?

Mid spring to late autumn

Can I still fish in the river?

Yes, the river will only be closed for approximately 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, between 4 – 5 p.m. It is accessible and traversable all other times. At this time we are not planning to blast on the weekends.

Will the fish be hurt by the blast?

No, we are utilizing a bubble curtain specifically to protect the fish and keep sediment within the blast area.

Will the noise cause disruption?

The sound level of the dredge work is very similar to the current operations we have going on at the shipyard. The ‘blast’ noise sounds similar to small firecrackers. Please see the example video to get a better feel for the operation.
